Supergirl “The Darkest Place”

Supergirl - The Darkest Place-0

Supergirl’s writers have gotten better about internal reveals in their plot. They’ve managed to let several things simmer for long enough that they come to a more natural fruition. They’ve been doing that on The Flash, too, so I’d imagine that it’s an across the board deal.

Speaking of, J’onn starts hallucinating things, in one case nearly shooting a DEO agent. He asks Alex to run a few tests on him, and they turn up something strange. She doesn’t recognize it, but J’onn does; he’s seen it at least once before. He immediately goes to M’gann, and demands that she reveal her true self. She tells him the truth; she was the White Martian that refused to follow orders, and failed to actually save anyone but herself. They fight in their true forms, but M’gann doesn’t have her heart in the fight, and J’onn wins easily. He dumps her in a cell, where he intends to leave her. She does tell him, though that the reason he’s feeling so sick is due to the fact that the White Martian did find a more efficient way of exterminating the Green Martians.

J’onn is slowly turning into a White Martian thanks to M’gann’s blood. It was the entire reason she was hesitant to give it in the first place. But that’s not really the end of J’onn’s problems.

Jimmy and Winn, on the other hand, have been cleaning up town. Jimmy might be pushing the angle of Guardian being a good guy a bit too hard, judging from Snapper’s assessment, though. But they’ve done a good job. So it figures that a more violent copycat would show up and wreck it. All of a sudden, Guardian is responsible for the people this guy is killing. Winn freaks out, but Jimmy keeps his cool, assuming that all they need to do is catch the guy in the act.

Maggie is on the Guardian case with the tenacity of a junkyard dog. Winn tries to get her to drop it through Alex, but all he really does is expose the fact that he and Jimmy are the ones responsible for Guardian. To her credit, Alex does her best to get Maggie to back off, but there’s one problem with that. The relationship drama is getting in the way, and it’s as subtle as a brick to the face.

Winn figures out that their copycat is only targeting certain people. To be specific, people he sees a having gamed the system by getting their charges dropped through mistrial. The guy’s name is Phillip Karnowski, and he’s doing this because his wife’s murderer got off on a technicality. He got a taste for vengeance after killing the guy a week ago, and has gone around offing criminals with similar backgrounds.

Winn and Jimmy figure out where he’s hiding out, and get there in time to stop him from killing once again. They have their fight; Jimmy just edges out a victory thanks to Phillip’s gun jamming on him. When presented with the two of them, Maggie makes the right choice, and lets Guardian go.

Supergirl on the other hand, was absent from that part of the plot. As she’s going to deal with the first Guardian incident, she gets intercepted with a transmission from Cadmus. She’s made aware of the fact that they have Mon-El, and she has to come without notifying anyone that she’s doing so. Of course she agrees to this. She winds up losing a fight to the real Hank Henshaw, who is now a cyborg. And not happy about J’onn stealing his life. She also agrees to discharging her powers, because we find out that, yes, Mon-El can suffer from lead poisoning. No clue if it’s just on contact, or long lasting like it is in the comics.

Also, Kara finds out about Lillian Luthor. And gets slapped by her. (Image: The CW)

They use the opportunity to draw some of Supergirl’s blood. Lillian’s got a vendetta against aliens in general, but Superman in particular. Anything to get payback for her dear Lex. If she only knew that he’d be president some day.

The reveal is that Jeremiah saves them. Somehow he has a key card, and freedom to move around. He refuses to leave with them, though. By the time Alex finds out and leads a team back, Cadmus has vacated the place.

Supergirl’s geared up for the crossover event, which it will kick off. It figures we’ll have to wait to find out what’s up with Jeremiah, though. Since Supergirl kicks off the event, I can’t imagine that being a focus next week.

Final Thoughts:

  • No clue what Real!Hank will do with access to the Fortress of solitude, which is what the blood was for. Or Project Medusa.
  • The Guardian plot did give them some opportunity for Batman/Arrow jokes, which was good.
