Supergirl coming to CBS

Supergirl

It would seem that the general viewing audience has yet to sour on the entire superhero genre. Nearly ever channel has their own hero show on the air, prepped to air, or has one currently in development. Sure, Superman has seen various iterations on television in the past, but the trend toward television superheroes didn’t really explode until Arrow made waves with it excellent action and story elements.

Well, now CBS is getting into the game snatching up a major DC property with Supergirl. The series will be poised as one hour drama (CBS loves those), and will be produced by Berlanti Productions (Arrow, The Flash). This leaves the door open on possibly seeing some cross network cameos which could be fun!

I love seeing all these properties getting the television treatment, but I fear that we might be close to overload before we even get started. Remember that we will be seeing three new comic based shows hitting different networks this upcoming season alone. Continuity has always been a problem with comic books and now having so many heroes inhabiting different universes (see: networks), things may get a tad confusing. At least in this case the possibility of crossover exist thanks to Warner and the production studios involved.

As far as I’m aware Supergirl is the only comic book property that CBS has, and while I look forward to seeing how they handle the character, the network isn’t known for taking chances or moving away from the drama and comedy department. Here’s to hoping that what we get is better than that terrible Supergirl movie from the ’80s.
