Supergirl “Better Angels”

Supergirl - Better Angels-0

Supergirl’s season finale landed last night. They apparently decided to resolve most of the hanging plots for the season as well. It was ultimately an unnecessary step; they got renewed for next season, but it’s understandable considering lead time.

Things pick up right where they left off. Alex takes a few swings at Kara with the sword, landing one or two. The armor she’s wearing makes it impossible for Kara to really do anything but dodge. So it’s a good thing J’onn wasn’t actually dead, since he brings their mother there to try and talk Alex out of Myriad’s grip. It actually works, and Non is understandably pissed.

He’s even more pissed off by the fact that the Supergirl broadcast snaps everyone else out of their Myriad state. Lord had his worries that the equipment would actually work, but it functioned just fine. Broadcasting the crest of the House of El to every single screen in the city was a little overboard, I felt, but whatever.

Everyone goes back to normal. Well, except Kelly. She’s still dead. Non’s upset, as he has failed Astra’s vision. Indigo, on the other hand, informs him that now’s the time to punish Kara for her actions. Really go scorched earth on her. Turn Myriad up full blast and let the consequences play out.

The consequences are like that scene in Scanners.

Lord has already figured this out. He knows that, at best they have a few hours before everyone on Earth’s heads asplode. It’ll start with really bad headaches. It will reach the searing level of head pain inherent in listening to Rick Astley. This would literally leave Kara and J’onn as the only survivors. Well, and all of the recaptured Fort Rozz escapees.

The problem is that General Lane came in and demanded to put J’onn under arrest. Which J’onn actually consents to in a similar way to that one scene in Man of Steel. Do note that these scenes also give us a glimpse of Superman…

…’s feet. The only people excited by this are foot fetishists.

If you were hoping they’d finish off the season with that, you were sadly mistaken. Anyway, Kara realizes (with a little help for Lord) that with J’onn out of the picture, there’s a very real chance that this is a suicide mission. So she goes around saying her not-exactly-well-disguised goodbyes to Winn, Jimmy and Cat.

Also, there was a reminder that Kelly was dead at some point. YOU HEARTLESS BASTARDS DON’T EVEN REMEMBER HER, DO YOU? SHE PERSONALIZED HER WORKSPACE AND EVERYTHING!

Just as she is getting ready to go and confront Non and Indigo, J’onn snaps most of his cuffs and demands to go with her. Lucy convinces her father that he should just let him go. I mean, shit, he was only in custody based on the honor system anyway.

Non once again informs her that there’s no way to stop Myriad He even gives her the power source for the Fort, for all the good it would do her. He’s smugly certain he’s won either way. They pair off for their fights; Non and Kara, Indigo and J’onn.

Indigo fights dirty, stabbing J’onn right in the previous stab wound she made. What I liked was that his response to this is to rip her in half over his head. About a hundred pot shots at the Genius bar being incapable of putting her back together passed through my head, but referring to them as geniuses is already an insult. Suck it, Apple.

Kara and Non duke it out in the air and on the ground. The fight is honestly as close to movie quality that you can possibly get on a TV budget. It’s also highly reminiscent of DBZ. Regardless, they eventually wind up locked in a beam-o’-war. Kara pulls out the stops here, beating Non and searing his tender eye meats.

Supergirl - Better Angels-4
What is with this television season and eye trauma?

Indigo uses the last few seconds before she bluescreens to tell them there’s nothing they can do to stop Myriad. Kara resolves to do the only thing she can; carry it into space herself. You know, that place without air to breathe or gravity for her flight to work with. Alex is against this and takes a quick look at Kara’s pod. Kara does manage to lift the entire fort into space, to her credit, and Alex makes the obvious save.

The falling action hits. Kara actually gets a promotion to a windowless office due to her service to Cat over time. J’onn gets a full Thanksgiving Turkey White House Pardon™ from, judging by the pronouns, President Waller. Jimmy returns Kara’s affections, and everyone is happy. Until a Kryptonian pod screams across the sky. Kara and J’onn go to check it out and discover a cliffhanger.

Supergirl - Better Angels-5
Streaky, is that you?

Supergirl just dropped a mystery pod on us. Who’s inside? Zod? Alura? Krypto the Superdog? Power Girl through plot insanity? If it’s Power Girl, boy did she come to the wrong place, ’cause we still have us a whole bunch of rocks and pointy sticks. Guess we don’t find out until next season.

Final Thoughts:

  • I’m serious about the Power Girl thing. I saw several very menacing sticks just walking around the block tonight.
  • My bet is Alura. Or a duplicate Kara from Phantom Zone shenanigans. But we won’t know that for a while
  • Wait, is Fort Rozz just orbiting the Earth now? Best hope it doesn’t have a degrading orbit.
