Super Mario Bros. Live Action Movie To Get 4K Special Edition Release

Super Mario Bros.

Monkey!

Ahh, the live action Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. There are few, if any, game-to-film adaptations that live in quite the same infamy as that film. While it does have its fans, the story behind its production is absolutely legendary. The making of this film was so disastrous that Bob Hoskins considered it his worst film decades later; and much the same for Dennis Hopper (King Koopa).

That said, those above-mentioned fans of the film have a treat in store for them. Umbrella Home Entertainment recently announced the release of a 4K Ultra HD version of the film to coincide with the 30th anniversary of its release.

This release, part of the Trust the Fungus Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, will contain 3 discs. The first of these will be the 4K cut of the film, as well as commentaries by the screenwriter Parker Bennett and producer Fred Caruso, among others. The second will contain the same bonus features and commentaries alongside a Blu-Ray quality cut of the film. The third will come with the original workprint of the film, and a wealth of bonus features not available on the first two discs.

In addition, the Collector’s Edition comes with a 250 page hardcover book featuring a host of production materials, interviews and artwork. It’ll also come with a 200 page bound book of scripts including early drafts. Also in the box re a genuine film cell from the movie, a Replica A6 1993 34 page Souvenir magazine, 8 replica lobby cards, 2 x A3 reversible posters featuring USA, Australian, Thai and Japanese original posters, a sticker sheet, and a selection of alternative slip cases, including one with new original artwork.

Needless to say, this will be THE version of the movie for fans, likely superseding even the fan-made cut from a few years ago. The obvious hope here is that the overall quality of the set as well as the extras will be a draw for more than just fans, though; the production of this movie was a spectacle that can absolutely draw you in. Previous releases, with much less in the box, have been far from successful, so hopefully Umbrella Home Entertainment has cracked the code, here.
