Steven Universe “Super Watermelon Island”

Steven Universe - Super Watermelon Island-0

So Steven Universe has come back for what I can only assume is exactly four weeks. After which, I’m sure, it will be replaced for three months of repeats of the Powerpuff Girls reboot. But for now, it’s back.

But you know what, it really helps when two episodes of your four week event aren’t leaked months ahead of their actual air date. So the core part of this episode was known ages ago. We knew that Lapis and Jasper would be defused in this episode, because another leak confirmed that, and we already knew that Alexandrite would win. We even knew that the Watermelon Stevens from way back had formed some sort of society on that deserted island that they kept visiting.

It’s oddly creepy how they communicate in terrifying wordless muted screams.

What we didn’t know was that Steven could control one of them in his sleep. He wakes up from just such a session to let the Gems know that Malachite is there. They tell him to stick with Peridot and prep the drill since that’s safer, and head off to deal with her. He’s not happy with the arrangement but realizes that he can just jump into one of his watermelon doppelgangers and help out.

The fight doesn’t really need any description, since that was the part that was leaked months ago. The thing is that Steven is actually the one to rally the Watermelon Stevens into helping out. Sure, they’re about as effective as the JDF against Godzilla, but at least the Lilliputians offer enough of a distraction for Alexandrite to turn the fight their way.

They’re able to split Lapis and Jasper apart, knocking them unconscious. Unfortunately, the earthquakes from the Cluster are getting worse. They “accidentally” let Jasper fall into the rift that is opened up.

You’re someone else’s problem, now.

They’re able to communicate through the melon Steven is in, telling him to start the drill. Their fight broke the warp pad, so they won’t be getting back any time soon. They’re on their own for this one, but the Gems are certain Steven won’t fail them. Either way, the Steven Universe event train is rolling.

Final Thoughts:

  • I’m guessing the sudden “horror movie hand on the glass” in the promos for the event is Jasper.
  • I have no idea how the Melon Stevens manufactured those spears.
  • The Melon’s little tribute ceremony is fairly creepy.
