Steven Universe “When It Rains”

Steven Universe

Well, Peridot lasted a whole week in the bathroom on Steven Universe. I would’ve figured she’d have some sort of shell shock from Steven’s bowel movements, or something. I would’ve guessed wrong.

The Gems have kept trying to interrogate her, unsuccessfully of course. After getting fed up with their latest attempt, they decide to warp off to track down other leads, leaving Steven behind to guard Peridot. He tells her that it’s okay to come out of the bathroom while they’re gone, but she’s pretty willing to stay there out of spite. Until the thunder hits.

Yeah, turns out she’s scared of thunder, and rain, and probably atmospheric pressure too. Though in her defense, she thought is was the sound of the Earth breaking apart. Steven allays her fears by giving an explanation of the water cycle that I’m pretty sure I remember learning in the third grade, then running out in the rain. Peridot is thus helped over her fears, and decides to repay Steven in information.

Thunder Buddies for life!

But since all of her data currently resides upon the ocean floor, she’s got to take him to the Kindergarten, since all of that sweet, sweet data was backed up there. Steven agrees on condition that they hold hands the entire time, because the buddy system keeps everyone safe and you can’t get separated (or escape easily).

The buddy system has gone on to safeguard the lives of millions throughout the world.

Steven starts to tell her about how he was born to dispel her misconception that he emerged from the Kindergarten, but she decides she doesn’t want to hear the story. They get to the control room with little effort, Peridot refusing to just tell the Gems about the Cluster the entire time. She does drop some knowledge about the fact that the fusion monsters were experiments in creating a geoweapon initiated by homeworld thousands of years ago, and that she wasn’t around when the experiments started. She fails to get an access panel open to hot wire the interface and despairs, but Steven rips it open.

She explains that the Cluster is the end result of those experiments. It’s a giant fusion monster made from millions of gem shards that will explode out of the Earth’s core, blowing the planet into tiny pieces when it manifests a physical form. Peridot is certain that Steven is all she needs to stop the Cluster, but he knows that there’s not anything he can do that will really help with something like that. Then a bunch of those fusion mutants attack.

Steven protects them with a bubble, but even then they get cornered. Peridot tells him to do something, anything, but Steven tells her that he really can’t do anything else while he has a shield up. He literally needs someone who can be more proactive while he provides defense. Luckily, the Gems show up and deal with the mutants.

And boy, are they pissed off to find Peridot out of the bathroom.

Peridot finally decides to tell them about the Cluster, having seen that she will need their help. and the episode ends on that

Final Thoughts:

–  Peridot is literally the most pencil-necked nerd in the series.
–  I liked how, just as Peridot said they couldn’t possibly reach an agreement, Steven tells her he’s done with the bathroom. Because she agreed that he could use it.
–  “Let’s run into this corner! Oh no! We’re cornered!”
