Steven Universe “Keystone Motel”

Well, the fallout from last episode of Steven Universe is probably going to last most of the week.

Pearl has been trying really hard to get back in Garnet’s good graces. And failing. Even a direct apology fails. Luckily, Greg busts in to ask Steven if he wants to go on a road trip with him. There’s an internet guy in the state of Keystone that’s selling those big car wash brushes for cheap. Keystone is likely the state that Springfield resides in. It’s a five corners state! Anyway, he sells Steven on the crappy motel they’ll be staying in, and Garnet decides to join them over Greg’s protestations that the hotel isn’t as awesome as he said it was.

It's every bit as crappy as any motel room I've ever been in.

Greg asks Garnet to watch Steven while he likely gets brutally murdered by the internet brush guy. Shortly after he leaves, she starts arguing with herself and defuses. Ruby and Sapphire disagree over whether or not to forgive Pearl. Ruby, angry that Pearl could betray their trust for fusion, which they both feel strongly about, storms off, while Sapphire stays in the room.

Steven decides to go for a swim in the motel pool, an act that I would personally advise against. He finds Ruby pacing back and forth in the pool enclosure, muttering to herself. He convinces her to walk in the pool and cool down. He childishly notices that she’s created a warm spot (while walking at the bottom of the pool), before realizing that the pool has literally started to boil and scald him. He, jumps out before he becomes thoroughly cooked, though.

I guarantee you, probably the least bacteria-laden that pool has ever been.

Also, all of the bed bugs have died of hypothermia.

The room isn’t much better. Sapphire’s mere presence is more effective than the room’s AC unit. Frost crystals literally begin to form on everything, including Steven. He gives up on staying in the room once he realizes that even the toilet has frozen over, and he has to go pee in the bushes. Greg, however, is back, and not axe murdered to boot. He comes bearing pizza, and Steven fills him in on the situation, as well as the fact that the pool has now evaporated.

Steven laments the fact that despite his efforts, Ruby and Sapphire won’t make up. Greg tells him that sometimes the only thing that fixes feelings is time. He tells him that breakfast in the best diner in the world will make everything better, which is exactly the sort of parent promise that you know won’t work out.

And it doesn’t. Gems don’t need to eat. And Ruby totally wrecks the table. Steven and Greg managed to save their plates, but Steven hurls his on the ground, fed up with everything. Ruby and Sapphire suddenly realize their error and follow him out while Greg has to explain and pay for the damages. At no point did they consider Steven’s feelings in all of it, and they finally make up over this. And it turns awkward. Like, “I don’t know why my two romantically linked friends invited me along I am a total third wheel” awkward. Greg catches up, noting that they can never return to that diner again, and Ruby and Sapphire re-fuse into Garnet.

When they get back, Pearl tries to apologize to Garnet again. At the the very least they’re on speaking terms. If you count “not now” as speaking terms.

Final Thoughts:

  • Free Ice.
  • Sapphire is a cyclops.
  • Square pizza is impossible to eat.
