Steven Universe “The Answer”

With all of this bombing, I’m pretty sure Cartoon Network is guilty of war crimes or something, now. Maybe not. I don’t know. But whatever, new year, new Steven Universe.

Steven’s sleeping in the bed of a truck in the barn because… I don’t know, when Garnet wakes him up to tell him how Ruby and Sapphire met as a sort of birthday present (since the fact that she was a fusion was spoiled). What follows is sort of interesting.

The segment is actually presented much like a story being told, with Estelle voicing all roles that aren’t established. It really brings to mind a parent reading a story to a child in a lot of ways. Granted, only one or two heretofore unseen characters actually play a role in the story, but it’s a little thing that I actually found myself liking.

Not a spoiler, and also unlikely to be terribly relevant in the short term. I'm guessing dead already.

The big thing here is that it shows how things are presumably like on the Homeworld, even though the entire story takes place 5000 years ago on Earth. The caste system is as rigid as it’s been alluded to have been. So much so, that the accidental fusion between Ruby and Sapphire caused by Rose and Pearl’s attack is viewed with great disdain.

As it turns out, the only way Homeworld uses fusion is with gems of the same type; essentially making a large version of, in this episode, Ruby. Regardless, Blue Diamond isn’t happy about how things didn’t turn out exactly how Sapphire predicted, and demands Ruby be shattered. Sapphire decides it’s better to live free from those rules and drags Ruby over a cliff to escape. They eventually fuse again, this time on purpose after exploring their surroundings.

Garnet eventually runs into Rose and Pearl, and immediately fears for her life. Rose, however, decides to help Garnet make sense of her state of being informing her that she is the answer to her questions. That answer being love.

Final Thoughts:

  • He’s sleeping on a mattress in a truck bed. Clever.
  • You get to see another Pearl, looking as miserable and sad as you’d expect.
  • They keep showing all three of Garnet’s eyes more often than they did before. It kind of freaks me out, because I haven’t quite gotten used to it like with Tienshinhan yet.
