Steven Spielberg to adapt Roald Dahl’s “The BFG”

Steven Spielberg has signed on to direct The BFG, which is sadly not a movie about the awesome gun from Doom. It’s actually a Roald Dahl story, which Variety sums up thusly:

The story follows a little girl who leads a big, friendly giant and the Queen of England on a journey to stop the fiercer man-eating giants from gobbling children.

This is gonna be cutesy as fuck – after all, it’s being written by E.T. scribe Melissa Mathison. Spielberg’s efforts at making children’s movies have historically not been great (Hook and Tintin), but it doesn’t matter cause I’m not gonna see this anyway. Shooting will presumably take place after Spielberg finishes the long-gestating Robopocalypse, which is so not happening it’s not even funny.

Also, there’s no way that the Queen won’t be played by Helen Mirren or Emma Thompson, right?
