With the streaming wars well underway in the world of video games, Twitch seems to be pulling out all the stops as it feels the might of Mixer and Caffeine nipping at its proverbial heels. And in this instance, one celebrity that uses Twitch let slip a little detail that the company probably didn’t want people knowing.
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster let slip during a live-stream on Twitch that he was paid $100,000 simply to watch a Thursday Night Football game on Twitch. The admission came during a game of Fortnite, a game very popular in the nine-year-old demographic.
Schuster and another streamer watched the game through Amazon, the parent company of Twitch which has some streaming rights to football games during the season. It’s not clear if there will be any fallout from the revelation, but this does show that Twitch is fighting against other streaming platforms to keep celebrities, sports stars, and “electronic athletes” from jumping ship by offering some nice perks.
Expect to hear more news about money and exclusive contracts for streamers and the weeks and months continue. There is a full blown war happening right now and Twitch, Mixer and Caffeine are all drafting their e-sport lineups at a breakneck pace.
I’d also like to throw my hat into the ring for any company that wants to pay me to watch sports or play games. I’m incredibly cheap and equally poor at competitive video games. Call me.
