Star Wars Rebels “A Princess on Lothal”

Star Wars Rebels Leia

So this was the big one for Star Wars Rebels. This is the first time we see a Skywalker that isn’t a burn victim in samurai bondage gear on the show. And…

Star Wars Rebels Leia
You look older than 8.

I actually had to do a little bit of searching, because I had been laboring under the delusion that the show takes place roughly 8 years after the end of Revenge of the Sith. Turns out I was wrong, and it’s 14 years, which makes me look dumb for thinking that there must be something in that blue milk that you occasionally hear about. Anyway, Bail sent her to Lothal with ships to replace those lost by the rebellion, under the guise of them being loaded with supplies for the suffering people of Lothal.

Too bad the Organa’s have used the tactic too many times. Lt. Lyste decides that, since they seem to keep losing ships to rebels, he should hedge his bets. He brings a bunch of stormtroopers, two AT-ATs, and puts the boot on all three ships.

You usually only see these when you forget to pay your parking tickets.

Since Kanan and Ezra get there in disguise, she has them escort her around Lothal to get an opportunity to figure out how to get the ships away. Just as they get to the Phantom, though, they find that Chopper and Ryder got caught by some stormtroopers. They mention, when pressed, that they have orders to execute him on site since he’s an escapee. The Ghost shows up just in time, and in the firefight, Ryder “kidnaps” Leia and Zeb makes Kanan and Ezra’s failure to stop them look good.

“Looking good.”

They then have to figure out a way to get around all of the security the Empire laid down on those ships. Blowing the boots off the ships is out of the question; Ryder was forced to work on them in prison, and he knows they’re to heavily armored for explosives to do the trick. He decides that if they’ll get him off Lothal, he’ll help them sabotage them.

So they start their plan off by going back to the Imperial depot in the Phantom, concocting some wild story about how the stormtrooper assigned to her helped them escape, and should probably deserve a medal. They use this as a distraction to cover Ryder and Chopper as they deactivate the boots. Unfortunately, the first ship leaving catches the lieutenant’s eye.

What follows is a crazy fight split several ways; the stormtroopers taking shots at Ryder while the Ghost tries to deal with the walkers, and Leia, Kanan and Ezra try to deal with the troopers. Kanan, seeing that the walkers aren’t going down easily, decides to just lightsaber their legs to get them to stop. It really makes me wonder what the fuck took Qui-Gon so long to get through the door at the beginning of The Phantom Menace, to be honest. Ezra force pulls the weapons out of the remaining trooper’s hands, and Leia uses them to wipe out the few troopers still standing.

When the lieutenant finally gets back with reinforcements, Ezra takes the last ship. But before he does, he has to make the theft look good.

Star Wars Rebels
Sure as hell won’t be the last time this happens, Princess.

Final Thoughts:

  • The actress they got for Leia (Julie Dolan) actually does a really good job of sounding like her.
  • Honestly, the AT-ATs went down like total punks. Bird beats camel, two to zip.
  • Well, at least we have a reason why she barely reacted to the whole Jedi thing in the trilogy.
