Star Wars Rebels “An Inside Man”

Star Wars Rebels - An Inside Man-0

Star Wars Rebels is heading for its mid season finale and they sprung a reveal on us. One that pretty much everyone saw coming.

Ezra and Kanan go back to Lothal, on Ryder’s request. The Lothal rebel cell have been using agents in the local factory to sabotage Imperial equipment. Ezra and Kanan agree to infiltrate the factory with an old man we’ve never seen before, and will never see again. No, seriously; Thrawn makes an example of the deliberately shoddy workmanship from the factory through him.

Alas, we hardly knew ye. To his credit, Ryder does ask about him later. (Image: Disney XD)

Ezra and Kanan had an objective; to find out what secret project the empire was working on in this factory. To that end, they slip the mandatory inspection hold thanks to a distraction from Chopper. After getting some stormtrooper uniforms, they get credentials off of a droid and send Chopper into the restricted area. He’s successful in getting the plans, but Ezra and Kanan arouse suspicion from the patrols. They make their escape on a lift with Kallus when he asks them to help him secure the perimeter.

Which leads to the least surprising part; Kallus is their new Fulcrum. Let’s be honest, everyone pretty much saw this coming after The Honorable Ones. You don’t give a character that look without implying they’re having some serious misgivings about their employer. Even Zeb’s surprised when he finds out after the fact; their forced bonding session had a secondary effect. The fact that Governor Pryce is awful probably didn’t help that much, either.

He decides to help them escape by using his security credentials and some showmanship . He then asks them to make it look convincing. Ezra doesn’t hesitate, though Kanan was upset by it; he wanted to be the one to do it.

They make their escape via an AT-DP. The problem being that it wasn’t supposed to be out there; the two AT-AT’s turn on it, eventually trying to crush them. They use the opportunity to cut their way into the one crushing them, just as Ryder and his associate come to recover them. They get away fairly clean, and go home.

For his part in all of the drama, Thrawn stays incredible cool. Even after losing the TIE Defender plans to the rebels, he doesn’t really change in demeanor. He seemingly views it more as losing a less important piece in a game. He’s playing the long game, he’s trying to flush out his mole. H knows that, whoever it is, they will eventually make a mistake.

Dude, there’s no way he doesn’t have at least an inkling that it’s you. (Image: Disney XD)

Star Wars Rebels has Maul set up for the next episode. I can’t wait for the possibilities that lie ahead with him. I’m going to be really upset if they’re just setting up the rematch for the stand alone Obi Wan film.

Final Thoughts:

– Forcing them to test their own machines was a brutally effective technique.
– For what it’s worth, Chopper trusted Kallus right from the get go.
– Kallus being the new Fulcrum was expected, but that’s mostly due to it being a good fit.
