Star Wars Rebels “The Call”

Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels dropped some space whales on us. Literal space whales. The entire episode may as well have been the sort of thing that you’d find on a black light poster.

The Ghost is out looking for a fuel refinery the Empire uses to supply their ships. They’ve run out of fuel themselves, however so they’re shutting down anything deemed non-essential to conserve energy. Things like excess lighting, and heat. They’re not having much luck until Ezra hears whale song that no one else can hear.

Star Wars Rebels
Huge ass space squid-whales.. Squhales?

These things are Pergil, and Hera hates them. Why? Because countless friends of hers have died because they really like crashing into ships. She would like nothing more than to just open fire on them and be done, but Ezra thinks they’re important. Two non-Imperial TIEs show up, and they’re barely able to take them out considering their fuel problem. Kanan takes the opportunity to be insufferably smug about it, since they wouldn’t have been able to take out the TIEs if they’d wasted that energy shooting Pergil.

It turns out that Ezra’s hunch was right, because the Pergil lead them right to the refinery. Ezra notes that the refinery workers shoot at the Pergil to keep them away from the pool of gas that they refine into fuel. He doesn’t have enough time to draw the obvious conclusion, however, because he, Sabine and Kanan are going to do a HALO jump onto the platform… without parachutes.

Sabine lands with the help of Chopper, and Kanan force pushes a safe landing for himself, but Ezra chokes and nearly eats it. Kanan save him by lifting him back onto the platform like a Jedi master, but Ezra’s scream attracts the attention of the workers. Their original plan was to blow the gas and steal the fuel in the confusion, but Ezra nixes that since it would hurt the Pergil.

They take a turret, with Ezra using it to cover them on their way to the landing zone. Unfortunately, the refinery is non-OSHA compliant, and opposing fire drives him off the edge. He loses his helmet in the fall, and the gas is no good for breathing, but the Pergil save him. They have a super trippy eye to eye moment, too.

That gas is basically LSD, isn’t it?

Things are looking bad on the refinery. The workers have the Ghost surrounded, despite their best efforts. All hope is lost, until Ezra rides in on the Pergil. They wreck shit hardcore, Ezra slices a TIE in half with his lightsaber, and the Ghost gets away with the Empire’s fuel shipment.

Also, the Pergil straight up eat this guy. T-rex flip and all.

The day saved, they thank the Pergil. Hera’s even come around on the damn things. They apparently needed the gas to breathe, and also…

You have got to be fucking kidding me.

They can go lightspeed. That’s why that one had trippy eyes earlier. You know, this episode was okay, it didn’t knock my socks off or anything. But I have no idea what to make of this. I think Star Wars Rebels is trying to give me a stroke.

Final Thoughts:

  • To be honest, going into this I didn’t expect lightspeed Cthuloid squhales. But you know what? Fine.
  • On the plus side, they’d probably look pretty sweet on the side of a panel van, maybe flying around behind Gandalf or something. That would be pretty wizard.
  • I have no idea how they were surviving in the vacuum of space with no protection other than helmets.
  • Does anyone else smell toast?
