The human adventure is just beginning.
When it comes to Star Trek movies, The Wrath of Khan tends to get the top spot, overshadowing its predecessor (not necessarily unearned; it’s the one you can show to non-fans and actually get them to enjoy it). Which is kind of a shame, since Star Trek: The Motion Picture is probably the closest any of the Star Trek movies ever came to being like a particularly good sci-fi episode of the original series. Hell, it is, after all, everyone’s second-most-favorite hack-fraud’s favorite among the various Trek movies.
Also, it has a fantastic soundtrack, which they kept using bits of in the shows. The main theme might be more recognizable as the theme from Star Trek: The Next Generation, for some at least.
Well, to the point; Paramount and Fathom Events are bringing it back to the big screen at select locations in the US. For two days (September 15th and September 18th), you can experience The Human Adventure once again, on the big screen, as it should be. DeForest Kelley’s disco attire is best viewed in this way.
Which brings me to the one sad bit. The event will be showing the original theatrical cut of the film. Which is sad, because the Director’s Cut is way better. Let’s just say that the original theatrical cut is how it earned the title of Star Trek: The Slow Motion Picture.
Well, let’s just hope Star Trek fans complain hard enough to get the Director’s Cut in theaters. Otherwise, you might know what it’s like to merge with your theater seat at a molecular level. Stillworth being experienced, though.
