Star Trek Returns To TV With New Series In 2017

Star Trek 2017

Star Trek is boldly returning to television in 2017. This all new series will premiere on CBS, but all following episodes will run on the CBS All Access streaming service in the United States. In territories outside of the United States the show will be aired on television and multiple platforms by CBS international. I’m a bit worried about this being essentially a streaming only show, but as it’s Star Trek I’m all for giving it a shot. The CBS All Access service is available or $5.99 a month.

No details have been released regarding the shows title, era, or general outline, but we do know that it will feature an all new cast of characters exploring the universe, while dealing with contemporary themes in a way that only Star Trek can. Star Trek has always been better as a television series as it gets the chance to slow down and be a drama, as opposed to an all out action fest like its movie counterparts.

Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek 2009) has been tapped to serve as producer on this new show for CBS, but there will be no connection with this new Star Trek series and the upcoming movie Star Trek Beyond that is currently in development.

David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios made the following statement regarding the project,

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/General Manager of CBS Digital Media said the following regarding this new Star Trek series being aired through CBS All Access,

“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access. We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

The new Star Trek television series will premiere January 2017.
