‘Star Trek: Discovery’ taps Michelle Yeoh as captain, Doug Jones as alien & Anthony Rapp as gay officer

Star Trek: Discovery has been all over the place while still quite secretive. We are all excited for the possibilities with word that the main story is about an “incident” in Star Trek history that has been talked about before, but never fully explored. What that is, is still a mystery as Fuller has confirmed it’s not the Romulan War and that Section 31 isn’t involved.

What we do know is that this new series features a lot of new aliens, something that the earlier television series sort of only mentioned. To be fair, creating and modeling new aliens costs money, so we got a lot of “human like” races.

But one thing we are getting is a new alien Science Officer on the Discovery that will be played by Doug Jones (Hellboy, The Strain, Buffy). His character, Lt. Saru, is a Starfleet Science Officer from a yet unnamed new alien race to the series. While this is great, I wonder how they are going to explain why this new race (of which is big enough to become a Starfleet Officers) just sort of does not exist later. Could be a nice story there!

Lot’s of online talk has also been around word that first gay officer (Kelvin timeline Sulu doesn’t count as he was originally not written as such) and we now know that Anthony Rapp (Rent) is playing Lt. Stamets who is billed as an astromycologist and fungus expert. It’s weird that his specialization is so focused so we can expect him to play a major role with whatever the Discovery deals with.

Lastly we also know that the captain of the Shenzhou will be played by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh. Captain Han Bo, will be leading the Shenzhou , a ship that plays a major role in season one of the show. We still have no word on the captain of the Discovery, but as 2017 gets closer we should be hearing something soon.
