Star Trek Bridge Crew Is A Four-Player Co-Op Game In VR

Star Trek Bridge Crew

VR is nothing but a gimmick, but that’s just this humble writers opinion. This isn’t the first time this craze has come around, although it is a lot more affordable in this incarnation. Well, relatively cheaper for people with far too much disposable income.

But that gimmick may be getting its first killer app, or at least a killer app for Star Trek fans. A leak via DigitalSpy reveals that a new Star Trek game is in development for the VR devices set in the JJ Abrams universe.

Ubisoft was quick to confirm the leak and stated that a big announcement will be made during their E3 press conference on Monday. The game is titled Star Trek Bridge crew, and if that brings back memories, it should. Star Trek games are known to be crap, outside a few titles, but one standout was Star Trek Bridge Commander that let you control a ship from the bridge.

While this game has no connection to that title, the idea is still the same, only in VR. It’s stated that the game “”…utilizes a VR headset and hand-held controllers to boldly mimic seated players’ heads and hands on the virtual bridge, providing 360-degree views and the ability to complete such tasks as activating the warp drive, scanning foreign objects in space and broadcasting relevant imagery to the ship’s viewscreen.”

The game takes place on the bridge of the USS Aegis.

Depth is always a question with these VR games, but with Star Trek Bridge Crew allowing four-players to take part, each controlling a specific subsection (Captain, tactical, engineering, helm control) there is the possibility for some “interesting” adventures.

Another neat feature is that the game will randomly generate mission so that players will always be on their toes. These missions will also vary in scope and won’t just be ship-to-ship torpedo fests. That means that in between blowing up aliens, you’ll also be doing science and exploration work.

Star Trek Bridge Crew is set for release sometime this fall and will be compatible for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
