-The Stand finds a new director-
The Stand is shaping up to be a real problem for Warner Bros. Its original director David Yates (the last four Harry Potter movies) dropped out, was replaced by Ben Affleck, who left to play Batman before being replaced by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace), who – surprise – also bowed out.
Now WB has offered the job to someone…interesting. That would be Josh Boone, director of the The Fault in Our Stars. Hmm, I’m not familiar with the movie, because the book is written for tween girls so I haven’t read it. Let’s take a look at the trailer.
…yeah, that looks like the work of someone who should be at the helm of perhaps the most famous postapocalyptic novel ever written.
Look, I might be acting unfair towards Boone. Choosing counterintuitive directors has been working out very well for studios lately – The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Marc Webb was most famous for (500) Days of Summer; Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo are best known for episodes of Community and Arrested Development; and Jurassic World‘s Colin Trevorrow’s last movie was Safety Not Guaranteed.
My problem is with Warner Bros thinking they can make a film out of The Stand at all. The Stand is almost 1,200 pages long. You want to know how this would work best? As a 12-hour HBO miniseries. But as a film, even one that clocks in around three hours? I don’t see it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m gonna see it – if Stephen King’s name is on it, I’m there, as my ticket stub for Hearts in Atlantis will attest – but I have serious doubts about this one.
Also, we now live in a world where I’m more excited for a new Godzilla movie than I am for a new adaptation of The Stand. Weird.
