The original Xbox was one of the most desirably hackable consoles of its day. Most of that was due to being equipped with an integral hard drive, which made adding custom programs fairly easy. But hey, if you want a full history lesson, hit up Modern Vintage Gamer’s videos on it:
Well, per The Verge, the entire OS for the console has recently been leaked. Dev kit, emulators, documentation, build environments, and the kernel, all on display. Granted, some of this was already known in the homebrew scene, but this is literally everything you could want if you tinker around with this stuff.
The source code for an early version of Windows NT 3.5 also leaked online at about the same time. That said, since it came out in 1994, it’s probably not as valuable a leak. But it’s still notable.
Granted, most emulator development teams are probably torn on this. As stated back when Nintendo’s various OS’s leaked, they already exist in a gray area, and even looking at something like this can give them legal trouble. On the other hand, the sorts that like to preserve games and the like are probably in heaven right now.
