Sony’s new 4K console is officially called the PlayStation 4 Pro

Sony is terrible at keeping secrets. The new PlayStation 4 Slim was officially announced today, but the console has already been photographed, reviewed, and taken apart for the world to see. I don’t know how the thing got loosed on a craigslist site, but I do know somebody over at Sony got wicked fired!

With all the news on the leaked slim, which is now official for $300, we sort of lost track of the PS4 NEO. Sony has now shed light on that upgraded console by announcing the console as the PlayStation 4 Pro. It comes with a lot of cool things including:

  • Upgraded CPU with higher clock rate
  • 1TB Hard Drive
  • Designed for UHD TVs
  • Designed for PlayStation VR

Sony didn’t give detailed specs on the PS4 Pro, but did mention that this upgrade has been in the works for a while. I find that funny as this generation hasn’t been around all that long, but even then I personally don’t think it has a killer game on any system to justify it. Don’t mistake me, I really enjoy my Xbox One and the PS4, but I could easily live without them, especially since the PC is my thing.

PlayStation’s Andrew House stated that, “Display technology offers so much potential if there is content to leverage what’s now possible. With PlayStation 4, we’re pretty much maxing out what 1080p TVs can do with most games.”

That means developers will be able to take advantage of the upgraded power of the PS4 Pro, but Sony has stated that no game can be made exclusive to the PS4 Pro and must be able to run on the standard PS4.

PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny also addressed those people who are thinking of upgrading to the PS4 Pro but don’t have a 4K capable television. He stated that,

“…you don’t need a 4K TV or HDR TV to experience the benefit of PS4 Pro.”

He noted that the PS4 Pro will utilize “super-sampling” and use anti aliasing to squeeze the most from your non 4K television. Sure, it’s not going to be as good as those fancy UHD TVs, but things will look better while you save up for a new TV this holiday.

It was also announced that a firmware update is coming that will make every PS4 ready for HDR gaming, so even stock PS4 kiddos will be getting an upgrade.
