Sony Reveals Project Morpheus VR Headset at GDC

We were all speculating about when Sony would make the big reveal; would it be at CES with their Keynote or would they wait until E3 this summer? Well, we have our answer as the unveiling of Project Morpheus happened at GDC.

Matrix inspired name aside, Sony introduced us to the VR (Oculus Rift inspired) headset during their  Driving the Future of Innovation event.

Project Morpheus will work with the companies PlayStation 4 console and uses a 1080p display, that offers users a 90-degree field of vision. We also found out that the PlayStation Camera will be using in conjunction with the Project Morpheus headset for tracking as well as, the little used of late, PlayStation Move for additional motion control.

For now the unit plugs in via a five-meter long HDMI cable, but Sony stated that they would most preferably see the unit be wireless. Also of note, Sony claims that the unit itself won’t put weight on your nose or your face, while the design will allow for maximum airflow so the user will not experience any fogging of the lenses.

Sony went on to say that there are six distinct area that they need to address and push to successfully bring VR to the masses.

  1. VR is a medium, not a peripheral
  2. Presence is the killer app
  3. Games are only one type of content
  4. Emotion is amplified
  5. The experience is social
  6. It is for everyone
