Sony in the Process of Buying Funimation

Funimation

It’s over nine-tyfive percent.

Yes, that’s right; Sony’s buying 95 percent of Funimation. There’s probably not really any reason to worry, especially if they keep everyone there doing what they do best. Sony also helped them with their streaming platform, so they’ve already got a working relationship. If they can keep the people from their film division from leaving the Super Special Big Kids Fun Corral™, even better; we don’t need The Emoji Anime.

This isn’t Sony’s debut in the Anime business, either; they own the ANIMAX network, which broadcasts in 23 countries across the world. They also own AXN, which aside from Anime, also broadcasts the sorts of content you’d consider typical. This acquisition does, however, angle them into direct competition with Hulu and Netflix.

“Around the world, Sony’s networks have been major players in the anime space for nearly two decades, and in more recent years we have rapidly increased our networks’ over-the-top and digital offerings to consumers. With the acquisition of Funimation, the combined IP of ANIMAX, KIDS STATION and Funimation allows us to deliver the best anime to fans across all screens and platforms.” – Andy Kaplan, Sony Pictures Television President
