Sony just announced that a ‘Venom’ movie is coming October 2018

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard any sort of word about the Venom movie that Sony was trying to develop. Things went pretty quiet after Marvel snagged up the rights to use Spider-Man in the Marvel universe of films.

But now, seemingly at random, Sony has confirmed that a Venom film is coming, and that it’s scheduled to release October 19th of 2018. That sure doesn’t seem like a large enough window, especially with regards to the amount of CG work these hero movies like to use.

Little is known about this Spider-Man spinoff, or if it is any way tied to the current Marvel universe. The project doesn’t even have a director at the time of this writing, but it does have a script completed from Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. The later worked on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Chances are that this film will tie into the older Spider-Man universe that Sony created and could potentially mean Andrew Garfield making a return, even if for only a cameo. Venom has had solo comic series in the past, but his best connection is being the main baddie to Spider-Man.

Sony will need to move fast with locking down a director and getting a cast squared away as we are already getting deep into 2017. CG work on average can be around six-months (it depends on the scale) and a Venom film would seem to require a fair bit.

All we know so far is that Sony is wanting this Venom project to turn into a franchise. It’s a play that makes sense as they would retain the rights and world that they’ve already created, while letting Marvel incorporate Spider-Man into their separate universe.

This could be a win/win situation for fans at the very least.
