Sony Handheld Hinted At Via Cartridge Patent

Try try again.

A design patent out of Korea suggests that Sony might make another attempt at the handheld market. The patent shows off what is supposed to be a game cartridge unlike those of the Vita. Sony Interactive Entertainment filed the patent last year, with the Korean intellectual property rights service (KIPRIS) making it public this month.

The patent shows little of how the design is meant to work. It is, however, stated to be made out of metal and synthetic resin. So it certainly looks like they’re planning another run at the handheld market.

All that said, Sony denies that they’re developing such a platform. And supporting that is the fact that companies file patents for things like this all the time. That doesn’t mean anything will come of it.

Still, it’s hard not to imagine that they don’t want a piece of that market. It is, after all, fairly lucrative if you get it going right. So who knows? Maybe the next successor is right around the corner.
