Sony Confirms Project Q, Their Game Streaming Handheld

Sony

What is pattern recognition?

Sony had their PlayStation Showcase yesterday, and during it, they confirmed the rumors of a new handheld. Currently codenamed Project Q, it is a dedicated game streaming device designed for remote play from the PS5 over WiFi.

Yes, really.

Project Q comes with an 8 inch screen, and all of the functionality of the PS5’s DualSense controller. Did I mention that it only does remote play from your PS5? Over WiFi?

Sony plans on releasing Project Q later this year, and more news for it is supposedly coming. No announced price, no specific launch date.

Personally, it seems like the solution to a problem no one has. It only works over WiFi, so you either need to be in a WiFi environment (ideally a stable, high mbps one), or burn absolute assloads of your mobile data plan setting up a hotspot. The thing it seems best for is letting you go to another room of your house while still playing PS5; like, say, you need to go to the kitchen to watch something but you still want to play God of War.

In short, as of right now, it strikes me as an incredibly niche device. I have trouble believing they’ll sell many of them as is. But who knows, maybe they’ll reveal more features in the future to sweeten the pot.
