Sonic Mania Plus coming with new characters and goodies

Sonic Mania Plus is getting a physical release with a ton of goodies this summer!

Sonic Mania was a fantastic experience when it released last year, and has been called the best Sonic the Hedgehog game since the series went 3D. Heck, it even made the list of our best games of 2017. Now we are getting a new Plus version of the game that includes a lot of things to make fans happy. Well, unless you spent all that money on the special edition, but I didn’t, so I’ll let it slide.

Sega made the announcement for Sonic Mania Plus during their panel at South by Southwest today (SXSW). This new addition will feature two new playable characters in the form of Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel.

Sega is really digging deep with these characters as they aren’t new to the series. Fans will know these two from SegaSonic the Hedgehog, a very rare arcade game that Sega released back in the early 1990s. It was a weird game that you played via a large trackball.

On top of that comes the new Encore Mode that will allow players to experience the game in all new ways. It also will feature a number of visual changes. This makes sense, especially if the two new characters has some special abilities. You can sort of think of this Plus edition like Sonic 3 to Sonic & Knuckles, only without the lock-on cart.

Even better is that Sonic Mania Plus is getting a physical release that includes a really sweet reversible insert that makes the box look like a classic Sega Genesis box. The original art also earned itself a holographic look if you don’t fancy the Genesis look. There’s also an included art book as well.

Sonic Mania Plus will hit stores sometime this summer for $29.99.
