Sonic Mania E3 Hands-On Impressions

We also got some hands on time with Sonic Mania. Though, to be fair, we had some at last year’s GameStop Expo and liked what we saw, even back then.

So… nothing’s actually different in any meaningful way other than new levels to race through. The game feels like the old-school games. It’s right and tight.

This demo, however, did show off a new level we hadn’t seen before. It was themed with gambling stuffs like all of the best Sonic levels. This time, with an old west flavor. Totem-like pinball bumpers launch you all over. You can hop in a giant gun and get shot across the level. Said gun can be aimed in a similar way to those pivoting barrels in Donkey Kong Country.

It gets pretty weird.

The desert outside sports the sorts of robot baddies you’d expect. Namely robot condors/buzzards/eagles that swoop at you. There were also some bulls with a weak bumper on their back, similar to the shield enemies in Sonic 2.

Overall, the demo left me wanting more. It let you play as Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles, though you only had your choice of one (I, naturally, picked & Knuckles Sonic). Honestly, I’m anticipating Sonic Mania; it’s been a long time since Sonic fans have had a cornucopia of good Sonic games to choose from.

Head to the 35:22 mark in the video below to see the full playthrough of the stage we talked about above. And be sure to head over and follow us on Facebook for more live streams of tons of games from the floor at E3 2017!
