Something Awful Founder Richard “Lowtax” Kyanka Is Dead

Lowtax

He was 45. Pour out a box wine and some Ambien for him.

Another Web 1.0 personality is no more. Richard Kyanka, founder of Something Awful, where he was known as Lowtax, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound November 10th. Longtime oldschool SA member Fragmeister broke the news.

His greatest achievement was, perhaps, the creation of Something Awful, a forum where users would pay $10 to register an account. The forum generated a number of personalities, concepts and humor over the course of his tenure as owner. People like slowbeef and Diabetus, Mega 64, among many others; (the hacker known as) 4Chan came into being due to the fact that Lowtax banned hentai from the forums. Something Awful was also the origin of The Slenderman mythos, as well. Oh, and also SA’s kinda responsible for Shmorky. Watching this guy call that shot from 2006 in glorious 240p is magnificent.

Lowtax himself was no stranger to to engaging in the hijinks. Hell, he got knocked on his ass by Uwe Boll… repeatedly.

Before I found out how he died, I figured it was either this catching up to him, or the various pill/alcohol combos… in addition to the pies and meat.

Why, yes, that is an entire summer sausage, and yes, you are supposed to peel the casing off before you eat it because said casing is inedible.

Regardless, he is survived by his three daughters, his two ex-wives, and his mother. And neither camp on either side of the man’s life seems to like each other. One of his ex-wives was, in fact, the one to reveal that it hadn’t been the way he lived catching up to him.

No matter how you felt about the man, though, his impact is hard to ignore, even if what came from that impact shone far brighter than he did himself. Even if he did seem to spitefully kill himself to avoid paying child support.

Rest in Pie, you magnificent bastard.
