Snapchat Gives Their Pixy Drone Project The Axe

Snapchat

Will continue to sell the current model for the foreseeable future.

You might remember Snapchat’s Pixy Drone. As a refresher, the drone had a number of features unique to it, but notably the ability to send captured video directly to your Snapchat app. There’s bad news, and good news about it.

The bad news? Snapchat is canning the project, which launched roughly 4 months back. This means that any development on a next gen Pixy model is dead. Per the Wall Street Journal, sources close to the company said that they’re shelving the project as a whole. As the WSJ points out, this is less a matter of success or failure of the project, but rather a necessary shift in priorities. The cryptocurrency market cratering just so happens to have coincided with a lot going wrong in the economy, likely giving the tech industry some pause.

The good news? The original Pixy will still be for sale. Or at least, it will for the foreseeable future. Since Snapchat is moving on from drones, there’s no real telling how long they’ll continue to sell the original model. Worst case scenario, it’ll only be for as long as supplies last. So if you wanted one, now might be the time to buy one.
