The internet is really, really great…
Snapchat recently banned Naughty America and banished their porn lenses from its platform. But, if you think that stopped a major porn provider, you’re clearly not very familiar with the history of the medium. NA has since begun distributing the source files for their lenses, and encouraging others to build on their original work.
Naughty America originally intended the lenses as advertising for their ring of adult sites. This included bringing in some of their performers into the picture, allowing them to be placed in an AR environment. CEO Andreas Hrononpoulos had initially believed that the lenses were not against the ToS for the platform, since they weren’t available publicly. Snapchat, on the other hand, disagreed, and wiped them, and Naughty America, from the platform, under the justification of a violation of their guidelines and ToS.
According to Hrononpoulos, users are downloading and making their own versions of the lenses. Which is a problem for Snapchat, as they have no way of preemptively identifying these lenses, and therefore have to rely on users reporting them. Remember, kids, the Streisand Effect is a very real thing. It’s almost like Snapchat would’ve been better off leaving them up and simply keeping a tighter leash on things…
