Making good on their solemn vow to make sure we never have another year without a Spider-Man movie, Sony has announced the director of the Sinister Six spinoff, which is expected to come out after Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2016. Their choice? Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard, who will also write.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Sinister Six, here’s a brief rundown:
The Sinister Six has had several permutations in the comics but originally featured Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter. Octopus already appeared in Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, while Sandman was the villain (along with Venom) in Spider-Man 3. Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) are the villains in Amazing Spider-Man 2.
I’m fine with this as long as we finally get Mysterio on the big screen. He’s always been one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, and I hope they don’t change anything about this appearance (although I know they will; the Rhino is basically a Transformer now).
Goddard is also writing and producing Netflix’s Daredevil series. Comic book movies forever!
