While everyone is still fussing over the “notch” that seems to be aesthetically ruining very beautiful, very expensive phones, Sharp decided to go all in and then some. The Sharp Aquos R2 compact has the honor of being the first dual-notch phone. You may begin crying.
Look, I get the idea of the notch as it saves money and just makes functional sense. I’d much rater have a clean screen but I understand the reasoning. And look, flagship phones are expensive enough as it it. They could make a clean screen but then everyone would just complain that removing the notch isn’t worth the cost of designing new screens.
As for the phone, the Sharp Aquos R2 features a 5.2” “freeform” display with the top=notch going around the selfie camera, albeit in a very weird manner. It’s a small phone so I understand the camera only notch, but something flatter it just more pleasing.
The second notch is at the bottom of the phone and goes around the fingerprint reader. It’s a big change too, as it puts the R2 compact at 5.2 inches with the R only at 4.9. Still, if the reader was on the back makes more sense and would allow for even more screen real-estate.
The screen uses an IGZO panel that features 1,080 x 2,280px resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. There’s a Snapdragon 845 chipset running the show with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. You also get 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage with support for microSD card.
The Aquos R2 compact is pretty darn powerful for a small phone. I can’t remember a mainline entry phone from a manufacturer that was under 5.5 inches at the lowest end. But if you have good eyes and love small things Sharp has the phone for you. Even better if you miss your old iPhone 3G which this reminds me of.
