Well, there’s a shame.
Sonic Origins, the recently announced collection of the primary 4 classic Sonic games, is coming on June 23rd. And it seems set to deliver the definitive versions of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. But there’s always a cost to these things. In this case, Sega has announced that, on May 20th, they’ll be delisting the previous digital versions of these games.
There are some exceptions, however. If the games are part of a compilation, they’ll stay with that compilation. They’ll also stay as they are in the case of things like the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion, which includes Sega Genesis games.
That said, the heftiest loss is likely on PC platforms like Steam. Aside from what was the definitive edition of Sonic CD (and coincidentally, it was the only one to break out of mobile platform jail to be there), Sega did something fairly unique with most of their legacy content on PC. In addition to giving you an overall package in the Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Collection, which featured a room that could be experienced in VR to really complete the 90’s experience while playing these games, they did one more thing.
They simply gave you the ROMs for their games.
This was actually a pretty big deal when they implemented it, and still is. Most companies didn’t just hand you that and say “hey, you want to play it on something else? Be our guest, you paid for it.” And they still don’t. This is, frankly, one of the only ways to get legal ROMs that I know of, short of ripping them from legit carts yourself. So if you want to enjoy these games as they once were, you may want to grab these 4 games before they’re gone.
And remember: Fun is infinite.
