Sega To Buy Angry Birds Creators Rovio

Angry Birds

Bun-chan in next Angry Birds game, anyone?

It seems that Sega is in talks with Rovio Entertainment Oyj, the developers behind Angry Birds, for a possible takeover. In a statement made on Saturday, Rovio said the following:

There is no certainty as to when the possible tender offer would take place or whether it would take place at all, nor as to the terms.

That said, it’s still a possibility, and people close to the matter have said that the deal could be announced proper on Monday. According to The Wall Street Journal, Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. is near a deal to buy the company for $1 billion.

A Sega spokesman stated that there has yet to be any “final decision” on acquiring the Angry Birds creators. Further more, that they continue to explore ways to “enhance its corporate value.”

On February 6th, the Finland-based Rovio announced that they had entered into strategic review and started non-binding talks with the Israel-based Playtika Holding Corp., which had offered to buy the company for €9.05 per share. That deal fell through, however, with Rovio announcing as such on March 22, causing their stocks to drop.

Nonetheless, things stabilized, and they’re still up 28% this year. As to whether the deal will happen, though is currently anyone’s guess.
