Savage #4 – Review

Savage #4 is the final chapter in this dramatic story that has entertained and showed me that dinosaurs are not the same in comics than in the movies. That said, it does seem like we’ll get something else in the near future, so I want to propose a toast to Valiant! May the next part of whatever comes be as amazing as this first!

The story here combines the best of both worlds: fast pace, making us feel the adrenaline in our veins as we go through the pages, and the slow, increasing drama and building of tension for plot purposes. This all comes together really well to give us something special.

Just as with the story, the duality we find in the art for Savage #4 is both amazing and interesting. You know I love the little details in books, looking at every little spot in an image, so if you’re that kind of reader and like to really get lost in the art, then this is your lucky day as Savage #4 is chock full of great art.

The harsh, hard, and wild style of the inks and rudimental coloring matches those old cave painting we’ve seen on the TV, and give the right look to the pages. I’m intrigued by how they managed to make it look that way, and even more, how they matched modern art alongside this primitive look. It all does seem a little strange at first sight, but Savage #4 looks great because of that combination!

That said, I’m a little nervous about one thing that the book touched on as it’s a very interesting topic: a wild man, which has never been in the “real world.” He needs to start from scratch, and that demands a lot of realism and opens up a great deal of the story. This could go either way so it’s interesting how the team will handle this.

And now that this arc has come to an end, I can properly tell you that this is a story that adults are really going to like, with a simple, yet interesting, plot. It has a lot of realistic scenes that will give you chills at times and maybe even a new perspective on the things we take for granted. In the end, Savage #4 turned out to be one of those books that makes you think about those little details we don’t often pay attention to.

“Valiant brings to a close the main arc to one of their most interesting new books”
