If you’ve spent some time online and perusing YouTube, you probably have seen ads from the upcoming action-horror film The Hunt. It looked like your standard garbage that would have come and gone, but now it’s gone before it even came.
Universal has pulled the film from release following criticism following the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. Produced by Blumhouse Films, The Hunt tells the tale of rich elites hunting us normies for sport. It the sort of film that has been made a bunch of times before with no issue.
The real hit to the film came last week when President Trump seemed to reference the film in one of his wild tweets. Something about Hollywood being the scapegoat for something or other. Look, I write about entertainment and I know our industry is an easy target for people who love surface-level arguments they get from TV/radio soundbites. I just don’t really have the energy to follow all the insanity that comes from his account.
Universal released a statement which read: “After thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film. We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film.”
You got politics on one end, violence in media on the other end, but the real story probably falls in the middle. The Hunt only started to push it’s marketing in the last few weeks ahead of next months release. The studio clearly didn’t have high hopes for the film. This all just gives them an easy excuse to kill the film and sling it on streaming and DVD/Bluray later.
