Rumor: Sony Considering PlayStation Classic

PlayStation Classic

I forgot that it was THX levels of loud.

In the wake of the success of Nintendo’s mini consoles, it’s really no surprise that other companies have plans to follow suit. Not to mention buzz for potential new classic minis based on the Game Boy and N64. And, according to rumors, Sony may be planning to follow suit.

During a recent meeting, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera let slip that the team had been considering the production of a PlayStation Classic Edition. Granted, he didn’t confirm that it was happening, merely that the team was talking about it. But that probably has your mind abuzz. In an interview with Mantan Web, he said:

Our company is always digging up past assets. I think there are various ways to do (a classic console). There have been discussions happening (within the company) on what kind of ways are there.

I’d argue it wouldn’t be a terrible move for Sony, though. The one benefit such a console would have over Nintendo’s is that Sony’s systems have had an integrated platform for over a decade. Any initial pack-in games could be expanded upon by allowing the system to connect to PSN. Even better, since they’ve been adding PS1 classics to the platform for years. Give it either a generous amount of onboard memory or the ability to attach a hard drive, and you have a serious contender.

This is, however, little more than pipe dreams at the moment. But who knows? People around my age are probably growing nostalgic for the hideously blocky 3d games of that period about now. A PlayStation Classic could be a money maker.
