I can’t wait for the open letter.
Its safe to say that the pandemic is laying a bit of hurt on theater chains. But that might lay particularly hard on AMC, given their spat with Universal. And so, rumors have begun circulating that Amazon has AMC in their sights for an acquisition.
AMC in particular may be rip for such a culling; according to experts, they may be facing bankruptcy. And that is in spite (or, possibly, because) of their being the largest theater chain worldwide, with 11,000 theaters.
Whispers of a potential buyout by Amazon come via sources speaking to The Daily Mail. As to whether discussions are still going on, neither company has issued a comment, nor have they done so in regards to a potential sale. That said, Amazon’s had their eye on buying a theater chain before; they were outbid for Landmark Theaters by Cohen Media Group, once upon a time.
All that said, it’s not hard to see the potential benefits of such an acquisition; at least, for Amazon. Having thousands of theaters in which to promote would be quite a boon. There’s also the fact that Amazon is already in the streaming business, meaning that they’d have a level of control between their theaters and platform that no other company would have.
Still, nothing’s set in stone, yet. But an Amazon-owned AMC, is far from impossible at this stage.
