Ronda Rousey is the worst thing to happen to Mortal Kombat and here’s why

Keyboard warriors hold off a sec before you rip me one in the comments.

Look, I have no problem with Ronda Rousey. Whatever you may think of her talents she could destroy pretty much anyone reading this. Without her the women’s division in the UFC probably wouldn’t be a thing and the WWE got a huge bump thanks to her now being involved over there.

That said, Ronda Rousey is the worst thing to happen to Mortal Kombat. For all the amazing things Ronda Rousey can do, the one thing she can’t do (especially if you’ve been watching her in WWE) is work the mic. The woman is a terrible talker.

What pisses me off in this situation is that Mortal Kombat has always been full of incredible voice actors, at least since its modern incarnation. Men and women who making acting with their voices their bread and butter, helping to build the wild and crazy narrative the games push.

Whenever a celebrity, no matter who they are, comes into a video game project they almost always bring down the rest of the cast. This isn’t what they do, and that goes doubly so for athletes without any acting training of any kind whatsoever.

To make matters worse is that Sonya Blade already had a fantastic voice actress that has been there since the game revamped itself two iterations ago. Imagine hearing a voice that you’ve come to identify with a character in a show and then suddenly next season they are replaced by someone that sounds nothing like them.

And my concerns about Rousey weren’t without merit as during the Mortal Kombat 11 reveal stream that happened today we got to hear a little bit from Sonya and it was bloody terrible. You know why? Because it simply sounded like Ronda Rousey reading lines for Sonya Blade, not like someone playing the character of Sonya Blade.

I know this is all some big marketing stunt, but I really love the stupid story the Mortal Kombat builds. I love the voice actors who work their tails off trying to sell me this insanity. So when some amateur comes in only because they have a name in pop-culture, hearing them pulls me right out of the game.

But maybe that’s just me. Maybe I’m totally in the wrong here. I’m sure the internet will let me know.
