Robin Williams dead at 63

I don’t need to tell you who Robin Williams is, but it is my sad duty to tell you that he died today at the age of 63. No cause of death was given, and most troublingly, his publicist did not rule out suicide, releasing only this statement:

Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.

Robin Williams was easy to make fun of – and people did, frequently. But let’s not forget just how fucking talented this man really was. It’s not as though he only made movies like RV and License to Wed. He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Good Will Hunting, his performance as the Genie in Aladdin is one of the best voice-acting roles ever committed to film, and he wasn’t afraid to go dark, as you can see in his creepy, disturbing work in Insomnia, One Hour Photo, and even pitch-black comedies like World’s Greatest Dad and Death to Smoochy (fuck you, I liked Death to Smoochy).

And you know what? I thought he was pretty terrific as Teddy Roosevelt in the Night at the Museum movies. He’ll appear in the third installment, Secret of the Tomb, this December, which if I’m not mistaken will be his last on-screen appearance.
