It’s back! After a 15 month gap season two of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty is back in action. Starting off from where season one’s “Ricksy Business” ended, Rick, Morty, and Summer have finally finished cleaning their house after the wild party they held. Even though our trio have gotten away with the party, not all things are always Risck free (see what I did there?). Rick informs Morty and Summer that, because they were frozen in time for so long, they are in a quantum-uncertain state of existence. Well, arguments ensue, timelines become duplicated, and not long after we have the hilarious situation of Rick trying to stitch back together 64 different timelines before the universe collapses.
One episode in season two and it is already obvious that Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have created a season that is just as wacky and clever (or maybe more so) as season one. Harmon and Roiland have created mass-hysteria in this episode with all the duplicated timelines. One of the most impressive aspects of this episode is that, even when it is up to 64, almost each and every timeline has something different going on. The speech from the characters are almost the same, but multiple re-watches must be made to see the different actions done by the characters in the different timelines shown on screen.
The time-splitting concept is something that audiences have almost never seen before, and definitely not in this magnitude. Even though the show is considered wacky, Harmon and Roiland never forget to input moments of subtle and profound insight. One Rick is shown preparing to sacrifice himself to save Morty from the universe collapsing on itself and then showing us a God-fearing side to him that lasts until the very moment he is saved, followed by a staunch “Fuck you God, not today bitch.” Never change, Rick, never change.
Rick and Morty will be airing every Sunday on Adult Swim at 11PM.
