How many time do we have to do this with Resident Evil?
Resident Evil has gotten more reboots and remasters in all various forms of media than I can remember. There is a series of CGI films (that stink), a live-action movie franchise (that stinks), a television series (that stinks), and a series of video games (most of which are pretty good). So, it’s strange to me that the rights to Resident Evil are so wanted for things outside of video games when those things are really bad.
Color me surprised when news came out that there is currently a bidding war going on for Resident Evil between four different movie studios in the hunt for a piece of that zombie action. Not only that but we know that Barbarian writer/director and The Whitest Kids U’Know star Zach Cregger attached to write and direct.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Cregger is descriobing the project as “a revamp that will take the title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games.” If anyone remembers the Resident Evil series on Netflix then you know it “tried” to do the same thing, only cramming the first two games into one with pretty bad results. If Creggar can slow things down and focus on the mansion and, you know, actual scares, then he might actually have something.
We don’t know exactly all the studios that want in on Resident Evil, but we know that at least Warner Brothers and Netflix have been mentioned by name as potential landing spots. Both are pretty terrible ideas as I’m sure they only want the name to add to a streaming portfolio and most likely won’t invest in a theatrical release with any real monetary back. But one can hope as horror always sells well.
