Resident Evil 7 is pretty gosh darn creepy. A lot of this comes from the mood the game sets and a lot comes from the crazy amounts of gore. But what’s strange is that for a series from Japan the game is heavily censored in its own country.
A few of the scenes in the game that are sure to give you nightmares were altered to reduce their impact in other territories. This sort of thing happens from time to time so that games come out, but some of the changes are just, well, they make the game weird.
There is a scene in the game where you need to grab a key from inside a corpse. It’s pretty got dang gross and the game makes you stick your arm down the throat of the headless corpse and its as disturbing as you’d expect.
In the Japanese version you simply walk over to the body that still has a head and just pick up the key. What’s strange is that in the American version the missing head ends up in a fridge later (it’s fucking gross), but in the Japanese version the head is still on the body, so when you pop open the fridge you simply get a photo of the dead guy with an “X” over it.
This turns a really awesome scene that is one of the creepiest in the game and turns into almost into a comedy. You can check out the video from Censored Gaming that goes into detail just what got changed above.
