Republican Politicians (Partly) Blame Mass Shootings On Video Games

1992 called, they want their pissantry back.

Republican Party House minority leader Kevin McCarthy has laid part of the blame for recent mass shootings on video games. This comes in the wake of two mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, which claimed a combined total of 29 lives.

In an interview with Fox News, McCarthy claims games “dehumanize individuals”.

I’ve always felt that is a problem for future generations and others. We watch from studies shown before of what it does to individuals.* When you look at these photos of how it took place, you can see the actions within videogames.

This is an echo of a sentiment shared by Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick in the wake of the El Paso shooting. A sentiment he shared on Fox & Friends:

How long are we going to let, for example, and ignore at the federal level particularly, where they can do something about the videogame industry. In this manifesto, that we believe is from the shooter, he talks about living out his super soldier fantasy on Call of Duty,

He at least acknowledged the large number of studies on the matter, but unfortunately remained in his own camp on it.

I look at the common denominators, as a 60-something father and grandfather myself, what’s changed in this country? We’ve always had guns, we’ve always had evil, but what’s changed when we see this rash of shooting? And I see a videogame industry that teaches young people to kill.

We have to take a long look at who we are as a nation, where we want to go, and what we’re going to tolerate from social media and from videogames,

Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick

*ahem*

From 1920 to 1933, Prohibition in the United States banned the sale of alcoholic drinks, resulting in illicit speakeasies which became lively venues of the “Jazz Age”, hosting popular music, dance songs, novelty songs, and show tunes. Jazz began to get a reputation as immoral, and many members of the older generations saw it as a threat to the old cultural values by promoting the decadent values of the Roaring 20s. Henry van Dyke of Princeton University wrote, “… it is not music at all. It’s merely an irritation of the nerves of hearing, a sensual teasing of the strings of physical passion.”[101] The New York Times reported that Siberian villagers used jazz to scare away bears, but the villagers had used pots and pans; another story claimed that the fatal heart attack of a celebrated conductor was caused by jazz.[101]

I could go on, but why bother.

I other news, Neil DeGrasse Tyson pissed off a bunch of people by pointing out that the media circus has exploited your fears effectively in regards to these shootings.
