Ready Player One film has its director

Ready Player One

The first thought that went through my head when I heard one of my favorite book, Ready Player One was being turned into a film was, “They are going to need a pretty awesome director to get this idea across.” It seems my thoughts were heard by the powers that be because legendary Oscar director (and video game creator), Steven Spielberg is on board to turn Ready Player One into a huge movie.

Deadline has reported that Ready Player One will be the next film the director takes on after completing The BFG, which I’m told itself is based of a book and not the gun from Doom. Zak Penn is also on board as screenwriter with his credits including X-Men: The Last Stand (that makes me nervous) and Marvel’s The Avengers (that makes me less nervous). It seems that Ernest Cline’s bestseller is in pretty good hand at Warner Bros. and I can’t wait to see what they do with it.

Don’t think this is some small task getting this book made into a feature length film as it’s rife with pop culture references that are crucial to the plot. No doubt a lot of deals will have to be worked out and a lot of palms greased to make this one happen. The good news is that Warner Bros. has experience with getting rights holders to play together as they showed with The LEGO Movie, so we can only hope for the best.
