To be honest, I didn’t even know they ever were.
You might remember the Ouya. One of the many crowdfunding successes, the Ouya was, sadly, a relatively tiny splash in the pond on release. Being open source sadly doesn’t mean much when you’re basically an Android box.
Well, you’d be as surprised as I was to find that, not only have small studios continued release on the platform, but the platform has continued to be supported up until now. Mostly due to the fact that the company was bought by Razer in 2015 to almost no fanfare whatsoever. And you wouldn’t be surprised to find that Razer is now planning to put Ouya and ForgeTV out to pasture. And by out to pasture, I mean the Old Yeller treatment.
The icy touch of the grim reaper comes for Ouya and ForgeTV on June 25th, which is when their stores and services will end. After that date, accounts for both will be deactivated, meaning you won’t be able to buy or download anything you’ve bought through the service. That said, anything you already have downloaded will remain accessible on the console, so you may want to download that copy of Amazing Frog or… uh… Canabalt? Before then. Or maybe don’t bother, because they’re both on Steam, and can run on a potato.
On second thought, though, you may want to buy whatever you can with your remaining store funds. Because any money you have on either storefront is non-exchangeable for cash. Thankfully, Razer has an FAQ covering the life and times of Ouya/ForgeTV, so you may want to give that a read.
