Like most of these things, sold once and then really never again.
Even if you were a fan of Street Fighter II, you’d be forgiven for not knowing about Street Fighter II: Return to the Fujiwara Capital. The OVA was produced for a 1995 celebration of Fujiwara in Nara, once Japan’s capital city in the past. Capcom was among the organizers and sponsors of the exhibition, and commissioned the 27 minute OVA, which was only sold at the event in 1995 on VHS. Per the Street Fighter Wiki, the animation remained virtually unknown since.
The plot centers around 4 of the game’s characters: Ryu, Ken, Chun-li and E. Honda. E. Honda calls the others up to show off a new technique he’s developed. All four, however, wind up transported back in time over 1,300 years to Fujiwara, back when it was the capital of Japan. You might expect some fighting, but its really more a means of showcasing the history and culture associated with the city using characters from one of Capcom’s most popular games at the time. It’s Edutainment!
The short did get released once again, as a special feature on a DVD celebrating Street Fighter‘s 15th anniversary. Otherwise, however, it would’ve fallen into obscurity; as thanks to that DVD release, a fan managed to get ahold of a copy and translated the entire thing.
