Per multiple sources (1, 2, 3), Quibi is shutting down. The pet project of Jeffrey “raging against the Black Cauldron animators” Katzenberg, Quibi offered bite-sized entertainment (roughly 10-minute shows) on the go. Unfortunately, it launched right around the time the Virus got into full swing, and the market they were aiming for (people with nothing better to do during transit) dried up due to nobody going anywhere.
There were talks of selling earlier in the month, but it seems that, in this dire economy, there weren’t exactly buyers lining up. So they appear to have decided to close their doors entirely.
While what, exactly, led the Quibi heads to this decision is not known for certain, there are other factors that may play into it. For one, they promised big, roping in the likes of Pepsi and Walmart into advertising on the platform. For another, well, some of their content was a bit “let’s see what sticks”. Exempli gratia, The Golden Arm starring The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s Emmy-winning actress Rachel Brosnahan. The Golden Arm is part of Sam Raimi’s 50 States of Fright, an anthology series.
