PS2 Emulator PCSX2 Gets A Sweet UI Update

PCSX2

Hey, got any grapes?

Emulators can be overly technical things, for normal people at least. And oftentimes, functionality is place over aesthetics, sometimes to the detriment of the whole. So it’s nice when the GUI of an emulator gets an update to look a bit sexier on that 4K monitor of yours, as has just happened with PS2 emulator PCSX2.

For those not in the know, PCSX2 is one of the few PS2 emulators, and widely regarded as the one with the highest compatibility with the PS2 library. Hell, it’ll even run PS1 games, just like the PS2 did originally. But for the longest time, the GUI wasn’t winning any beauty awards, aside from Miss Congeniality. Most would actually go and download a prettier front end for it. The new update mostly fixes that, though, offering not only an overhaul for the top bar, but also a grid view for your games, for which you can add cover art via The Cover Project.

As a matter of fact, anyone that’s used the PS1 emulator Duckstation will feel right at home. Which isn’t an accident as Duckstation’s primary developer, Stenzek, contributed to this release. You can get a good idea of the other improvements in this new, Qt release here.

That said, before you rush to download this build and get cracking, you should probably pump the brakes a bit. This build only supports Windows 10 and 11, first of all. There’s also the fact that PS2 emulation is still pretty hardware intensive; you’ll need a fairly beefy PC if you want good results.
