Well, at least you’ll get those remaining DLC characters.
If you remember a time when the internet was infested by Bronies, there was a fan-made fighting game based on the then-current My Little Pony generation. Needless to say, Hasbro did not approve, and one C&D later, the group responsible had to figure out what to do with their already considerable amount of work. Luckily, Lauren Faust came to the rescue, and designed a bunch of original characters so that the game could carry on, and that was the birth of Them’s Fightin’ Herds.
Having finally left early access in 2020, it seemed that there was a roadmap for the additional content to come, including a long-promised story mode. It seems, however, that this unfinished story mode will never be complete. A recent announcement has confirmed that after the next update, which will include two DLC characters, Them’s Fightin’ Herds will be ending development. And yes, the story mode is a casualty of this decision.
As we look forward to the release of Nidra and Baihe, let’s talk about what comes next.
After the Season 1 Pass is complete, we will be ceasing active development on TFH. We will still be able to release small patches to address game-breaking bugs, but no new content will be produced. Unfortunately, that includes Story Mode.
Story Mode has always been an ambitious feature and one we truly desired to implement. We know how much our fans have been looking forward to Story Mode chapters, and we hope you understand how much we looked forward to working on and releasing them.
We are looking for opportunities to release content that has already been produced for Chapter 2, starting with a new stage, “Restricted Section”. This stage will be a part of the version 6.0 update alongside Nidra and Baihe.
This announcement has naturally inspired a negative reviewbomb. Primarily because this was a promised feature, though it probably didn’t help that this news was relayed at nearly the bottom of a post announcing two DLC characters. It’s also worth noting that, as the game was crowdfunded, they’re catching a lot more flak for such a decision than your average indie game. They did address the fact that some aspects of the campaign backer rewards would need to be adjusted:
For any outstanding items related to our original Indiegogo crowdfund, this shift in development does mean we will need to adjust some of our originally planned perks. More information on this will be shared in the coming weeks via email and on our Indiegogo channel.
Not mentioned anywhere, however, is exactly why they’ve decided to end active development. And until the address the horse elephant in the room, it’s not hard to imagine that the users burned by this are going to continue to stew.
